We are made for movement
The HÅG balanced sitting concept is about the idea that sitting in balance leads to more natural movement of the body during your workday. It’s based on the principle that no sitting posture is ideal for longer periods of time, but that frequently changing the position of your body and legs is the best way to stay healthy, focused and energized. Scientific studies show that sitting in a HÅG chair leads to more movement than when sitting in other popular office chairs, or sometimes even when working standing up.
The best way to test our philosophy is to try one of our chairs to see how HÅG can help transform your everyday seating experience into something a little less ordinary.

What is balanced sitting?

Initially the concept of balanced sitting revolved around the natural sitting posture encouraged by a forward sloping seat. In this position the lumbar curve is preserved, the joint angles are open, and muscles are well-balanced and relaxed.
The position also provided greater mobility and automatically increased the activity level during your workday. In the HÅG brand this sitting philosophy was manifested in the HÅG Capisco family.

The balanced sitting philosophy soon evolved with the creation of the HÅG centre tilt mechanism and later, the HÅG in Balance® technology. The idea is that sitting in balance, with an open or free floating centre tilt functionality, automatically leads to more movement and variation of the posture.

The short term result being a richer user experience, greater energy and improved efficiency at work. The long term results being better health and less of the hazards associated with pro-longed sitting.

How does HÅG
in Balance® work?

In HÅG task chairs, a centrally placed tilting-point ensures that you always sit in balance, above the natural pivot point of the chair (unlike most knee tilt syncro mechanisms).
This puts you in control, as sitting in balance is always the best starting point for moving. As the seat and the backrest of the chair are linked together in a fixed angle, the front edge of the seat tilts upwards when you lean backwards and down when you lean forwards toward your desk. This allows you to tilt backwards and forwards with equal ease, using your legs to control the movement.

What are the benefits of the HÅG in Balance®?

It’s easy to move around

All HÅG chairs are made to promote movement and variation.
The HÅG in Balance® technology makes it easier to change your position as you shift between tasks or want to change your posture for relief.
There is no need to stop and adjust the chair, the chair intuitively follows your movements and adjusts automatically.

Constant movement

Because you are sitting in balance, you’re never really sitting completely still. Small, subtle micro-movements occur all the time as the chair follows your work flow.

Increases your circulation

The HÅG in Balance® stimulates ankle movement, in turn activating lower leg circulation and enhancing circulation throughout the body.

What proof do we have
that balanced sitting
actually works

A scientific study, carried out at the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, shows that you can actually be active while sitting down with HÅG SoFi.
As many as 73% of the subjects in the study reached levels of movement classified as “light human activity” when sitting in a HÅG SoFi with the centre tilt mechanism in an open mode, outperforming a conventional dynamic chair.
The study shows that sitting down at the office (in a HÅG SoFi), under certain conditions, can produce even more movement than standing up.

Another study undertaken by Professor Emeritus Einar Stranden, at the Aker University Hospital in Oslo, shows that the HÅG chair enables four times more foot controlled movement than a similar chair with the tilt-mechanism in a locked position.
The study further shows that the dynamic sitting pattern of the chair had significant beneficial effect on the trans capillary fluid balance in healthy controls.
In other words Professor Stranden showed that HÅG chairs reduce the swelling of the lower legs normally caused by constrained sitting postures.
