HÅG was established already in 1943 by Håkon Granlund in Oslo. The company produced furniture in wood and steel, primarily for schools, and had certain success. But by the end of the sixties, the post war baby boom was over, the schools were built to overcapacity, and volumes dropped sharply. By 1972 equity was lost 16 times, the company only got supplies in return for cash payments, and was in other words technically bankrupt. The original owner saw no better option than to hand the company over to a young recent recruit, Torgeir Mjør Grimsrud who moved the production to Røros and skyrocketed the company to international success until the company was sold to the first investing private equity fund Ratos, owner prior to Triton.
In 1975 the Danish furniture company Rabami (RBM) was established. In the years to follow the company expanded and acquired the canteen and conference company Smithco Line in 1998 and a brand new factory was opened in Vissenbjerg, on Fyn, a Danish Island. A year later the companies merged under the name RBM Group A/S.
"I am going to make a chair that really takes sitting seriously"
Only one year after the launch of RBM in Denmark, Rolf Holstensson walked up and down his office in Småland; Sweden. He was annoyed. He had been sitting still for a long time, and his back started to hurt increasingly. His colleagues also started to complain about tensions in the lower back, their neck and shoulders. Rolf started to look for proper office chairs, but could not find anything good enough, so the inventor decided to make one. "I am going to make a chair that really takes sitting seriously", he stated - and so he did. The first RH chair saw the light of day in 1977 in Bodafors in the Småland region of Sweden.
In 1988 BMA ergonomics started as Biomechanisch Adviesbureau (now you know as well what the letters BMA stand for). After a few years in business, they concluded that only a few good ergonomic office chairs were on the market. The decision, to create their own office chairs, was a quick on! So that’s exactly what BMA Ergonomics did. They transformed themselves from a consultant to a designer and manufacturer of ergonomic office chairs.
Scandinavian Business Seating was founded in June 2007 when the Private Equity company Ratos integrated and consolidated the Norwegian company HÅG, the Swedish RH Form and the Danish company RBM. Common to all is the fact that they were strong, privately owned and founded companies with long traditions within the development, production and marketing of office chairs in Scandinavia and Europe.
